The aim of the School of Engineering's (SOE) Engineering Student Services (ESS) is to increase the retention and graduation rates for students in engineering. ESS staff at the University of New Mexico support students with Academic Advisement, Outreach, Recruitment, Tutoring and Multicultural Engineering Programs.

The Academic Advisement Office if located in ECE 133 and students who have not entered a specific SOE department must meet with an advisor every semester to ensure progress towards an engineering or computer science degree.
ESS also supports many MEP functions: the Women in Science and Engineering (WISE), the Native American Programs in the College of Engineering (NAPCOE), the Summer Introduction to Mathematics, Engineering and Sciences (SIMES), the Summer

Transportation Institute (STI), the Computer Science, Engineering and Mathematics Scholarship (CSEMS) Program, the Graduate Bridge Project and the NASA Training Project.
Numerous student organizations are supported by ESS such as the Hispanic Engineering and Science Organization, the American Indian Science and Engineering Society, the National Society of Black Engineers and the Society of Women Engineers.
ESS provides tutoring and study groups for students. These services are provided by undergraduate and graduate students who have taken these courses and can provide first-hand knowledge. |

ESS is dedicated to the recruitment of students into the academic disciplines of engineering and computer science. We are committed to academic excellence and to the success of students by providing academic resources, leadership, and community building. |

The Minority Engineering Program was created in April of 1990 to seek funding to establish a retention and recruitment program for minority students. In 2001, the program was renamed to Diversity Programs in the School of Engineering and in 2004 the program was renamed to the Multicultural Engineering Program. Our primary focus is to emphasize community building among students by implementing the following:
* Clustering minority students into common courses
* Creating structured study groups for clustered minority students
* Providing the students with an engineering orientation course
* Developing a student study center
Additional funding provides salaries for undergraduate students to do research for interested faculty, facilities, study groups, and peer mentoring. Other scholarship granting agencies include NASA, the Intel Corporation, and the National Action Council for Minorities in Engineering (NACME). Other industry support comes from the Celanese Foundation, Hewlett Packard, and the CH2M Hill Foundation.
